SAM SMOOTHY

Nothing shapes a better skier than time spent on skis. This can easily be seen from the increasing amount of world-class freeskiers coming from New Zealand, the 23-year-old, Sam Smoothy being the latest proof.

Raised at the shores of Lake Wanaka, the centre of the down under freeriding scene, he has been on two sticks ever since he could stand on two feet, and ever since he finished high school four years ago, Sam has spent back-to-back seasons north and south of the equator. Sam Smoothy is also the perfect example that one can be a real ripper with a laid-back attitude.

Although he did the race scene as a kid, he was always more interested in the fun side of skiing like jumping little kickers or shredding some pow. Thus he developed his trademark skiing style that goes so well with his name. That doesn’t mean that the surf enthusiast has no determination. With many respectable results in freeride comps across the globe, among others the victory at last winter’s Engadinsnow, he is steadily working his way into the absolute big mountain elite. To continue his progression as a skier, he has made Verbier his second home, but when asked for his favourite skiing terrain, he still names the club fields of his homeland. As much as he enjoys the high life, Sam is a fan of the smaller down-to-earth resorts as well. For Sam Smoothy it’s all good, as long as it goes smoothly!

What Marker bindings do you use? And where do you mount them?

The Jester Pro on my gotama and shiro with a marker 3000 on my katana. I vary my mounts depending on the ski and which length it is but generally 3cm forward of traditional at least and moving further forward from there.

What DIN do you have your bindings on?

I ride my jesters on 17 and start my 3000 on 18 and move to about 22 if I am heading into some heavy stuff.
